How to Read Your Car Insurance Declarations Page

Close-up of a car insurance declarations page

The declarations page, or dec page, is the one-page summary of your policy. Reading it carefully catches gaps and errors before a claim.

Key sections to check

  • Named insured and drivers: everyone in your household who drives should be listed or excluded.
  • Vehicles and VINs: confirm each car is correct.
  • Coverages and limits: liability (shown as three numbers), collision, comprehensive, UM/UIM, medical payments.
  • Deductibles: the amounts you pay before collision and comprehensive kick in.
  • Premium: total cost and payment schedule.
  • Discounts applied: verify each one you expect is listed.
  • Lienholder / loss payee: your lender if the car is financed.

What to do with it

  1. Confirm your limits match what you think you bought.
  2. Make sure no driver is missing.
  3. Check that every discount is applied.
  4. Keep a copy with your records and re-read it at each renewal.

Five minutes here can prevent an expensive surprise after an accident.
