The right amount of renters insurance comes down to two numbers: how much your stuff is worth, and how much liability protection you want.
Sizing personal property
Walk through each room and estimate replacement cost (what it would cost to buy new today), not garage-sale value. Most renters land between $20,000 and $40,000. A quick home inventory app or spreadsheet makes this easy.
Sizing liability
Liability covers injuries to guests and damage you cause. Standard policies start at $100,000, but $300,000 is common and usually adds only a few dollars a month.
Do not forget the deductible
A higher deductible lowers your premium. Pick an amount you could comfortably pay out of pocket, often $500 or $1,000.
When in doubt, slightly overestimate property value, since replacement costs rise over time.
