Does Renters Insurance Cover Pet Damage and Bites?

Pets and renters insurance is a mixed picture. The key is the difference between liability and your own property.

What is usually covered

  • Dog-bite liability: if your dog bites a guest or someone outside your home, your liability coverage may pay medical bills and legal costs.
  • Injuries your pet causes to other people or their property.

What is not covered

  • Damage your pet does to your own belongings or apartment (chewed furniture, stained carpet).
  • Damage to the landlord's property, which may come out of your deposit.

Watch for breed restrictions

Many insurers exclude certain dog breeds or charge more, and some deny liability claims for them entirely. Disclose your pet honestly when buying a policy.

Tip

If you have a breed on a common exclusion list, ask specifically whether dog-bite liability is included or whether you need a separate canine-liability policy.
