Sharing rent does not mean you should share a renters policy. In most cases each roommate needs their own.
Why separate policies are better
- A standard policy only covers the named insured's belongings, not a roommate's.
- A single claim could exhaust shared limits.
- If one roommate moves out or files a claim, it affects the other.
- Liability coverage may not extend to a roommate who is not on the policy.
When a shared policy is allowed
Some insurers let roommates be named on one policy, but you must usually request it and both names must appear. Even then, separate policies are cleaner.
The good news
Renters insurance is cheap, often $15-$30 a month, so each roommate carrying their own coverage is affordable and avoids messy disputes after a loss.
