Roadside Assistance: Worth Adding to Your Policy?

Tow truck assisting a stranded car

Roadside assistance is one of the cheapest add-ons, often a few dollars a month, but it is easy to end up paying for it twice.

What it covers

  • Towing to the nearest shop
  • Jump-starts and battery service
  • Flat-tire changes
  • Lockout service
  • Fuel delivery when you run out

Check what you already have

You may already be covered through:

  • A new-car warranty or manufacturer program
  • A credit card with roadside benefits
  • An auto club membership like AAA

When to add it to your policy

  • You drive an older or high-mileage car.
  • You have no other source of coverage.
  • You take frequent long trips.

One caution

Frequent roadside claims can occasionally affect how some insurers view your account. For most drivers, though, the low cost and convenience make it worthwhile if you are not already covered elsewhere.
